Coffee that tastes good & does good

Meet Java Joy

Java Joy is a mobile coffee cart run by Joyristas, adults with disabilities who serve coffee, give hugs, and spread joy wherever they set up. It's a program of the nonprofit ESP (Extra Special People), with hubs in Savannah, Atlanta, Athens, and Rome, Georgia, and High Point, North Carolina.

According to Java Joy, 87% of adults with disabilities are unemployed. Java Joy answers that with a paycheck, real training, and a year-round community. You don't have to change your routine to be part of it. You just have to make coffee.

How It Started

Java Joy began in Athens, Georgia, in 2016 with a handful of Joyristas and one coffee cart. The idea was simple: bring the cart to offices and events, and let people of all abilities do what they do best, which is make someone's day.

It has since grown to 72 Joyristas across the country. New Joyristas finish training with a White Apron ceremony, then help train the next group.

Java Joy Savannah reached out to us in the summer of 2026 looking for a local roaster. Their mission is close to several people on our team, so the answer was easy. We're now their official Hospitality Partner in Savannah and Hilton Head.

How We Work Together

  • We roast their coffee. Every cup a Joyrista pours at a Savannah event is Origin coffee, supplied at our Hospitality Partner pricing, so more of their budget goes to hiring Joyristas and paying for hours.
  • We host Joy Hours. Four times a year, two in Savannah and two on Hilton Head, Joyristas work our cafés alongside our baristas, greeting guests, running drinks, and helping at the register. Every Joy Hour is paid work.
  • We share the story. Joy Blend is how you take it home.

About the Coffee

The Dive Blend combines a natural-process coffee from our direct-trade partner, Mara Madeira in Brazil, with a washed coffee from La Pastora in Tarrazú, Costa Rica, for a medium roast that's comforting, generous, and easy to love. Think of it like a good meal at a crowded table.

It opens with delicate floral aromatics, brightens with mild citrus, and finishes with soft chocolate sweetness. It's smooth, medium-bodied, and never fussy, and it tastes just as good in a church-basement urn as it does in your V60 pour-over.

The Natural Brazil gives the blend its body and sweetness. It comes from Mara Madeira, a family farm in its 70th year that's now run by the family's third generation, led by women. The farm is Rainforest Alliance Certified and practices regenerative agriculture. The washed Costa Rican coffee is grown at high altitude in Tarrazú, and it adds brightness and a clean finish.

We source these coffees through transparent partnerships built on relationships, so they're good for the people who grow them. Then we roast every batch to bring out sweetness and balance. The coffee is honest from farm to cup, and the proceeds go right back into our community.
