Meet The Dive Savannah

The Dive Savannah may be one of the city’s most unusual nonprofits. It is both a catering company and an unhoused outreach ministry, and each support the other. The food helps fund the mission to help end homelessness in Savannah.

You already buy coffee every week. You should not have to choose between something you enjoy and something that helps make a difference.

In our city, too many people are still sleeping under bridges or in camps, and families are facing uncertainty every day. That reality is serious, but it is not beyond hope.

This is something we can change together. And you can help without changing your morning routine.

How It Started

In 2020, the pandemic hit, and services for people living on the street dried up across the country. Kristy Crill was a professionally trained chef and a single mom in North Georgia who was worried about making ends meet. She made a simple menu flyer on her home computer and sent it to five friends. Her offer: buy my food, and I'll use part of the money to serve people on the streets.

They bought the food, and she kept her promise.

That December, a stranger called to tell her about a unhoused camp in Savannah, a city Kristy had loved for more than a decade. It was under a bridge she'd driven past many times without noticing. Four days before Christmas, she drove down with a few blankets, walked across a plank into the camp by herself, and started talking to the people living there.

She went home heartbroken, and she couldn't let it go.

A few weeks later, Kristy and her daughters, Emily Schmidt and Susannah Crill, looked at the money their meal business had made and decided to give it away. In May 2021, they moved to Savannah. Three days later, they were handing out meals at the tiny homes and under that bridge.

They showed up at the same time every week with the same message: you matter, and we'll be back. Once people knew they could count on them, The Dive added help one piece at a time. One day, as they pulled up, veterans came out of the tiny homes calling, "It's The Dive!" That was the moment Kristy knew they were in Savannah to stay.

What They Do Now

The Dive doesn't run a traditional day center. They go wherever people need help: emergency rooms, streets, camps, and hospital waiting rooms. They work with local businesses, neighborhoods, police, firefighters, EMS, and hospitals to end homelessness for good, not just manage it.

  • Family reunification. They find the family behind every person on the street and help them get home, often with a one-way bus ticket.
  • Veterans first. The Dive actively searches for unhoused veterans. As they see it, there's very little we shouldn't do for the people who served us.
  • Addiction recovery. They get people into rehab when they're ready.
  • Mental health and medical advocacy. They stay by people's side in hospitals and crisis facilities.
  • Job readiness. They help people get the documents and connections they need to return to work, ideally with a local business.
  • Meals with no strings attached. Nobody has to sit through a sermon to eat. The Dive believes you can't minister to someone who is hungry.
  • Spiritual care. Their work is rooted in faith and offered with love.

Every dollar The Dive spends has to help someone get off the street.

About the Coffee

The Dive Blend combines a natural-process coffee from our direct-trade partner, Mara Madeira in Brazil, with a washed coffee from La Pastora in Tarrazú, Costa Rica, for a medium roast that's comforting, generous, and easy to love. Think of it like a good meal at a crowded table.

It opens with delicate floral aromatics, brightens with mild citrus, and finishes with soft chocolate sweetness. It's smooth, medium-bodied, and never fussy, and it tastes just as good in a church-basement urn as it does in your V60 pour-over.

The Natural Brazil gives the blend its body and sweetness. It comes from Mara Madeira, a family farm in its 70th year that's now run by the family's third generation, led by women. The farm is Rainforest Alliance Certified and practices regenerative agriculture. The washed Costa Rican coffee is grown at high altitude in Tarrazú, and it adds brightness and a clean finish.

We source these coffees through transparent partnerships built on relationships, so they're good for the people who grow them. Then we roast every batch to bring out sweetness and balance. The coffee is honest from farm to cup, and the proceeds go right back into our community.
